Volume = length × width × depth

Convert the bed into one volume

Multiply length by width by depth using compatible units. Add the selected allowance, then divide by the bag’s stated volume and round up because partial bags are not normally sold.

Example: A 12 ft × 8 ft bed at 3 in deep is 24 ft³. With 10% allowance, 26.4 ft³ requires fourteen 2 ft³ bags.

Important limitation

Bed depth and bag volume are planning assumptions. Uneven ground, settling, existing material and package labeling can change the amount required.
