Measure before converting
Measure finished length and width, then determine the required compacted or placed depth from the project specification. Record units beside every number. For uneven ground, take multiple depth readings and consider dividing the project into smaller shapes rather than relying on a single optimistic depth.
Calculate base volume
For a rectangular shape, volume equals length × width × depth. In imperial units, convert inches of depth to feet by dividing by 12. Divide cubic feet by 27 to obtain cubic yards. In metric units, measurements in metres multiply directly to cubic metres.
Add a visible allowance
Applying 10% means multiplying the base volume by 1.10. The right allowance depends on measurement confidence, excavation tolerance, compaction, cuts, spillage, packaging and supplier increments. Keep the base quantity visible so another person can review the assumption rather than receiving one unexplained total.
Interpret estimated weight cautiously
Weight equals volume multiplied by density. Real density varies with material composition, aggregate size, moisture and compaction. Use a calculator’s representative density for early logistics and budget planning only. Ask the supplier for the product’s current density and never use a generic estimate to approve a vehicle or structural load.
Build a complete cost picture
Material cost is order quantity multiplied by price per selling unit. A real quote may also include delivery distance, minimum-load or short-load fees, refundable pallet deposits, tax, pumping, spreading, equipment and labor. Clarify whether the supplier rounds orders to bags, pallets, half-yards or full loads.

- Confirm the required finished and uncompacted depths.
- Ask whether the supplier quantity is loose, compacted or placed volume.
- Check delivery access, load limits and minimum order increments.
- Have structural or safety-critical work reviewed by a qualified professional.
Limitations
Ready Materials provides planning estimates for simple rectangular volumes. It does not account for slopes, reinforcement displacement, complex shapes, soil engineering, structural design, codes or product-specific installation requirements.
Conversion reference
The calculator’s unit relationships can be checked against the NIST Handbook 133 volume conversion tables. Product density and ordering units must still come from the supplier.
