Material planning

Estimate materials before you request a quote.

Turn length, width and depth into a clear volume, a visible allowance and an optional early cost. Then continue with the calculator that matches your material.

Volume = length × width × depth. The allowance is shown separately so you can review it before ordering.

This is a planning estimate, not a supplier quote or a structural specification. Confirm product yield, density, compaction and delivery increments before ordering.

How to estimate material for a project

A useful material estimate makes each assumption visible: measure the finished area, add the required depth, calculate the base volume and decide whether an allowance is justified by cuts, uneven excavation, compaction or supplier increments.

Example: A 20 ft × 8 ft bed at 3 in deep has a base volume of 40 ft³, or about 1.48 yd³. With a 10% allowance, the planning quantity is about 1.63 yd³.

Before you buy

  • Confirm whether the specified depth is loose, compacted or finished depth.
  • Check the supplier’s selling unit and required rounding: bags, pallets, half-yards or truck loads.
  • Use product-specific density and yield for weight, bag count and delivery planning.

Material estimate questions

Why do I need depth for a material estimate?

Area measures a surface. Depth turns that surface into a volume, which is how bulk materials are commonly sold.

Should I always add 10%?

No. An allowance is a project decision, not a universal rule. Use it only when the project, material or supplier rounding makes it appropriate.

Can this estimate delivery weight?

Not reliably without the product’s density. Use the gravel calculator with the supplier’s density, and confirm load limits separately.
